#69

Paul's friends were charming and interesting, but one hour quickly turned into two-and-a-half before they finally said goodnight. Emily had slept in that morning and wasn't very tired, but her hopes for something beyond a romantic evening now seemed dashed.

"Sorry that ended up being so long," Paul said in the elevator. "Did you have fun?"

"Yeah, they're great. Really nice."

"You're unhappy."

"No! I just..." The doors opened, and they walked back to the room. "This has been an awesome night, Paul, really. Thank you so much. I guess I just got it in my head that it was leading to something." She smiled at him.

Paul stood in the foyer looking at the wall. Then he looked at her. "Oh."
